The Oklahoma State Government approached Gitwit to create a user-friendly Childcare Locator web application to help parents find licensed childcare providers across the state. As a parent myself, I wanted to enhance the process by offering multiple search options: 1) Guided Search, which leads users through a set of questions, 2) Advanced Search for specific criteria, 3) Radius Search to find providers within a certain distance, and 4) My Route Search, which searches for providers along a route between two points.
I designed the application with a clean, intuitive interface and incorporated thoughtful features to enhance the user experience, such as an interactive map view that displays providers’ proximity and offers driving directions. By providing multiple search options tailored to different needs, I aimed to empower parents with the flexibility to find exactly what they’re looking for in a way that’s both efficient and reassuring.

The goal of this phase was to create a better user experience that their current solution. As a team, we dissected the information that was currently on the home screen and decided where and when to present this information to the user. We ultimately landed on giving the user multiple ways to search for childcare and then showing them all of the options available via a list and map view.

Keeping within the brand language of the Oklahoma state branding, I tried to keep this feeling familiar yet modern. Because this is a heavy research phase for parents, I also tried to keep the interface simple and organized, not using any ux patterns that are unexpected for this type of searching. Finally, I created these building block illustrations as a nod to children’s play blocks, but also to bring some visuals alongside the clean UI.

The end results was a much simpler interface and an easier way for parents to quickly search and find childcare services for their children.
